Nighties Are The Unsung Heroes Of Comfort Wear

Blame it on Daphne Bridgerton or the idea of spending breezy summers indoors (again!), nighties have caught our eyes. They come in almost every fabric, pattern, length and style, but we seldom look at them with the same respect as we do loungewear. Loungewear, sure, has redefined comfort clothing, but nighties have always been the unsung heroes. They were there when we sobbed into them over missing maa during our hostel days or also on that particular PMS day was having a blast at our expense! They bring a sense of comfort no other homewear does, and also a nostalgic feel of home. Love nightie, but think it’s not for you? We make some points that may change your mind.

They Don’t Make You Look Old Or Boring
None of my trips home is complete without digging into my mum’s nightie closet. It’s almost a ritual now that brings solace and a sense of sharing. But we need to look beyond and stop looking at them as unfashionable and dull outfits that make us look like mums. There is nothing wrong with the idea, we wear their saris all the time, don’t we? We glamourise wearing their saris but shy away from this gem of clothing.

They’re Not Just About Comfort
While mum’s nightwear collection (accessible to me) isn’t all fancy, there’s a whole range of things to choose from, if you like a little variety and style and want to add some comfy nightgowns to your wardrobe. Satin slip nightdresses to Victorian nightgowns, and Bebo-inspired kaftans to prairie-style linen frocks. And, let’s just admit, this weather is too hot for leggings and pyjamas, anyway.

There’s One For All
You could pick something that’s casual and breezy enough to keep you relaxed while you lounge around the house, yet the patterns can be chic enough to help you put together a quick look for any unexpected video meeting. Don a stylish cotton overlay over your slip nightdress, or beaded jewellery and a warm lip colour with your printed gowns, and you’re set! There’s a style just for you, and a little looking up would help you find your style.

Bollywood Makes The Case
It’s not just us, the modest, comfortwear-loving laypersons, but celebrities too who make the case for nighties. Since the lockdown last year, nap dresses have become a big Instagram moment with celebs and influencers showing their in-the-house real selves clad in comfy nighties.

They Are Easy And Economical
From street vendors to high-street labels like Zara and H&M have come up a dedicated section for nighties, ranging from easy-breezy nude palettes to luxe appeal, something a beginner may want to take a peek into. Starting from merely Rs 250 on several online platforms, you can get a nightie of your choice in almost every price bracket. Now if that doesn’t take the cake, we do not know what does!
